The Green Earth Eco-Home in Kottarakkara is a signature project that showcases how modern residential architecture can work harmoniously with environmentally conscious design practices. Set amidst a semi-urban neighbourhood with lush foliage and natural terrain, this project emphasizes sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term value without compromising comfort or aesthetics. The goal was to create a home that not only reflects the lifestyle of the residents but also supports a healthier way of living by reducing environmental impact.
Built on a moderately sized plot, the home spans about 2,200 sq.ft and is thoughtfully planned to maximize the available space. The overall concept revolves around bringing nature inside through large openings, greenery pockets, natural materials, and ample daylighting. From the very beginning, the project prioritized features that reduce energy consumption, enhance air flow, and maintain thermal comfort even during harsh summers.
The layout follows a practical zoning method. The ground floor includes a spacious living room, dining area, and an open kitchen designed for convenience and aesthetic appeal. The living space is oriented to receive maximum morning sunlight, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere from the start of the day. Adjacent to it is a small indoor courtyard — a central feature of the design — that improves ventilation while adding a natural visual element. This courtyard acts as the heart of the home, bringing in greenery and diffused natural light.
Natural materials were used throughout the project to create a warm, earthy aesthetic. The flooring uses locally sourced tiles, while the façade incorporates clay bricks, wooden textures, and stone cladding. These materials not only reduce environmental impact but also age beautifully over time. The exterior design embraces simple geometric shapes, clean lines, and a neutral colour palette that blends well with the surrounding environment.
Airflow and ventilation were given special importance. Strategically placed windows, ventilators, and skylights ensure that fresh air circulates throughout the home without the need for continuous artificial cooling. This reduces dependency on air conditioning and maintains a comfortable indoor climate year-round. The roof structure includes provisions for rainwater harvesting, a solar power system, and heat-reflective coatings to minimize energy consumption.
The upper floor houses two bedrooms, a small family lounge, and a balcony that overlooks the greenery around the site. The bedrooms follow a minimalist approach with built-in wardrobes, soft lighting, and organic-themed décor. The balcony extends the living space outward and serves as a peaceful retreat for morning coffee or late-night relaxation.
The landscape design complements the eco-theme by incorporating native plants that require minimal maintenance. Permeable paving ensures proper groundwater recharge, while a small herb garden allows the family to grow their own fresh produce.
The Green Earth Eco-Home stands as an excellent example of how sustainability, comfort, and modern aesthetics can be blended effortlessly. This project has been appreciated for its thoughtful planning, cost efficiency, and long-term eco-benefits — making it one of the most notable residential designs in the Kollam region.
